The subject of the work just finished requires me to accompany it with a few words. First of all, this Let him who does not know me and who would, perhaps, in the following pages, look for such sensational disclosures as we see in those mendacious speculations upon the gullibility of the public from which the latter derives its sole knowledge of the Anarchistic movement, not take the trouble to read beyond the first page. In no other field of social life does there exist to-day a more lamentable confusion, a more naive superficiality, a more portentous ignorance than in that of A narchism. The very utterance of the word is like the flourish of a red rag $in blind wrath the majority dash against it without taking time for calm examination and consideration.

The Anarchists A Picture of Civilization at the Close of the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint John Henry Mackay Books
I think Mackay was a better poet than a prose writer. This novel reads a little like one of George Sand's flowery, but very idealistic offerings. One has to have a certain liking for such language and style. The novel is written in a very romantic, poetic, ecstatic fashion. It deals with very pressing social issues of the late 19th century. The action takes place in London and about 1/3 of the book is devoted to descriptions of human poverty in that city, while the other 1/3 to riots and fights with police. There is not much action, no build up of a story or of evolution of a character. The story line is about the lives of very few individuals (actually there are only two of them).I was impressed that the narrator was able to predict that in communism the state would become the oppressor, which indeed has happened.
For today's readership, the book might be a challenge. It flows slowly, in long statements. It takes its time. There are still some people around us who will enjoy it. I surely did.
